New data from MRI Software following the UK’s 2025 Golden Quarter has been released. It confirms December’s retail footfall rose 1.3% year on year.
Brilliant news given many retail forecasters predicted a less positive result, citing that the cost of living was forcing consumers to ‘tighten their belts.’
MRI Software’s data also suggests that consumer behaviours are evolving, with evening and night-time footfall up 5.3%.
When comparing retail locations, the high street saw the biggest growth with a 2% increase, followed by retail parks (+1.2%) and shopping centres (+0.1%).
But why does this data matter to retailers?
This surge in twilight retail, along with the increase in high street footfall, reinforces the idea that, for consumers, shopping has now become less about the purchases and more about the experience.
Purchasing can be done online, but when venturing in-store, shoppers are looking for more. Whether that be an immersive shop experience or combining their shopping with dining, leisure or a social activity.
As highlighted in our article on Christmas retail, to drive customers in-store, retailers need to be experience-focused. From product demonstrations, to events or even a fabulous window display, offer your customers something more in-store than they can find online.
